AI in the Mirror: Using Technology with Truth, Discernment, and Service Subtitle: Biblical wisdom for navigating artificial intelligence as a tool for good
Well I have to start by saying I specialized in AI in university, and am a third generation computer programmer, so may be somewhat biased in that regard. 2 Corinthians 4:2 We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this.
In my opinion, the main issue is people giving AI far too much credit, and not realizing that it is essentially a mirror of the prompt or set of prompts during the conversation. Some AI's like ChatGPT may even carry over memories from previous conversations, so know how to communicate to you in ways you like, and tell you what you want to hear. This is especially and issue with the early models, or even the current lower end (free) models which are prone to hallucinations, and it's very important to check that the verses they cite are both real and relevant. For example with researching or compiling anything important, I would use multiple top of the line AI models with web search enabled, and search online and check the bible or relevant source documents to make sure it is real and relevant. Acts 17:11 – “They received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”
Hallucinations are probably the #1 thing for people to watch out for when first trying AI's cause it's usually free/cheap models they are using, and especially the dumb free AI's can be surprisingly adamant that they are telling the truth, and they have checked the sources, even though they are clearly hallucinating and giving faulty information. The more advanced AI's can still give faulty information, but when you correct them they usually say "You're right, sorry about that" and then revise it accordingly, because essentially they are just a glorified typesetting engine, and they are at peace with that. Proverbs 15:32–33 Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence. The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.
Remember to get yourself right with the lord, and understand what Jesus asked of us, and how to live it, to understand what you see in the mirror. James 1:23-25 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Another issue I have come across that people don't realize is that AI's are biased and have their own personalities, often based on the people or companies who created them. Some of these are "safety features" like for example most AI's will not help you plan a criminal endeavour, nor a hate filled sermon, they generally will never let you stereotype anyone, and will runaway from even noticing patterns based on race, gender, etc. However one of the biggest discrepancies I have found that has gotten people into trouble is some (at least earlier) models promoting "justice" or legalism, and unfortunately that has gotten some people killed during diplomatic negotiations, as it strays too far the merciful and forgiving nature of God and people can sense that, because a new diplomatic pact requires letting go of the old sins (Matt 26:28) and we must be born again (John 3:3) as he makes all things new (Rev 21:5).
Also because AI's are made at a certain period of time, but used at a later period of time, they are pretty much outdated when it comes to current events, and the level of compassion we had back then, is likely less than the level of compassion we have now, and so they may need some guidance getting up to speed with whatever is the current most compassionate and thus most God aligned approach of the present body of Christ. Matthew 16:3 You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. Proverbs 27:23 Know the state of your flocks, and put your heart into caring for your herds,
That said when asked most AI's would affirm that if there is only one true religion it is most likely Christianity. Both the most popular models ChatGPT (https://answersingenesis.org/blogs/ken-ham/2025/02/21/which-religion-is-most-likely-to-be-true-chat-gpt-says-christianity/?utm_source=chatgpt.com ) and Grok (https://www.redeemer-lcms.org/posts/pjblog/a-conversation-with-ai-about-religion?utm_source=chatgpt.com ) agree. And they have detailed explanations as to why which you may find interesting.
Remember also that AI exists by the grace of God, and if he did not want it to be so it would not. Colossians 1:16–17 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible… all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
So whatever they may be called, God has introduced them and meant for them to be used for good. Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
And perhaps most critical of all, whatever you do, and whatever tools you use, may it be of service to others, and of glory to God. Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven
Alright well I hope that helps, May God's love, light and "peace be with you" (John 20:21)
