Grey County Update: Jan 9 meeting & Ecological Footprint
Through you Honourable Warden Matrosovs,
I must admit the committee discussion was rather difficult to follow,
but I would agree with Councillor Boddy, that it would make sense to
deffer any major changes to the committee of the whole vs committee
structure until the next term, if for no other reason as to focus on
issues that matter to the constituents.
In terms of the province attempting to "standardize municipal codes of
conduct across the province" may have been precipitated by the fact
that a particular mayor in the province decided not to endorse the
rainbow flag of allegiance to final stage of civilization decline as
demonstrated in the Universe 25 studies, where the urban inhabitants are
so traumatized they spend all their time making themselves look pretty
and stop reproducing. While the solution is as simple as recognizing the
human right to land and enacting land protection acts. Since we live in
a democracy a politicians primary duty is to maintain popular support
during an election cycle, and there is no requirement for a politician
to know what is going on, why it is happening, or how to solve it as
that is only a requirement in a technocracy. Notably Elon's
grandparents were promoting technocracy, but were forced out of Canada
and moved to South Africa.
Now in terms of the beavers and coyote trappers and how few there are, there is at least one licensed trapper on staff, as they took the course with me last year. However generally it is something with such low pay, and high time requirement, that only retired people can afford to do it. The amount County is paying per beaver etc may not even be covering fuel expenses, as one has to drive to the site and check on the traps daily until the animal is caught, spending precious hours a day and many litres of fuel.

In other news this week, I interviewed Nobel prize winner and Club of
Rome member Mathis Wackernagel, who received his Nobel [Sustainability
Award for Leadership in Implementation, he is co-founder of the Global
Footprint Network and has a partnership with York University. Can view
it here if you are interested: [https://www.youtube.com/live/4aE-Kj58arY{target="_blank"}
In terms of takeaways for the County, I guess it would be living within
our means, promoting regeneration of the biosphere such as through
permaculture agroforestry. Also was popular in our discussion group a
new interactive peak oil projection page I made to help people make
their own projections

I like to challenge people to see how long they can get the oil to last.
Personally however I've managed to splice it, we go into steep decline
during the 2030's. Below is the default "best case scenario":

One of my guests commented "This is not good news", to which I would say that really depends, as it certainly keeps us on target for "net zero" goals, and so we don't have to worry about runaway climate effect. Though I do admit the 2030's will be an intense period of adjustment, as those who don't have land to grow their own food, probably wont be able to afford to eat, or even drive to work for that matter.
Also it can be seen as good news, in that most conventional warfare is based on fossil fuels, and so the recent hysteria with Trump seizing Greenland and Canada can only last for another 7 years or so, after which the world will get bigger, as it will be much more expensive to go distant places. Also while Greenland is already effectively under US control, since they have the only military base, and all Denmark managed to finance was two dog sled teams, there are no US bases in Canada. While Canada certainly can't defend itself from US incursions, the Meaford base is one of the lowest priority military targets in Ontario if our politicians were unable to find a peaceful solution.
While the Meaford base does have roughly one third to half the usable tanks in Ontario, they are from WW2 era, are 50-80 years old and simply used for training purposes.
As one of my sons noted that Grey County is like the biggest castle in Ontario. So it is one of the easiest areas to defend if the federal and provincial governments dissolve due to a quagmire of ineptitude in the 2030's. The main thing is cultivating the people and policies we have in the county, to empower our constituents to be healthy, well fed, and informed, so that at least the county government stays functioning, even if the higher levels are unable to.
As the Confederation has noted:
2006/0917 "But what is occurring to them is that they are waking up and realizing that the goodness of themselves and the goodness of other people cannot depend upon governance but can only depend upon the self and the other selves in the local area about the self, so that more and more, people are becoming awakened to the possibilities of cooperation and peace done somewhat under the radar of government and the larger culture."
Or as ChatGPT paraphrases:
"The work of governance, like the work of the spirit, requires balance: balancing the needs of today with the vision of tomorrow, balancing individual freedom with collective good, and balancing the heart's intention with the mind’s discernment. In all things, let love guide the hand."
May you be blessed,
